I am having this same problem, which started with the xorg updates to Karmic I did on 12/1/09.

However, I am not running UNR. In my case it's a Toshiba Satellite 1100-S101 with Intel 830m graphics (Intel 82830 CGC). I'm running Karmic for i386.

Once the screen blanks, keyboard and mouse can't bring X back. Hard reboot is the only way.

Update: Last night I had the same symptoms minus blank screen. The background image is visible but the interface is not and computer is unresponsive.

Same issue there with a Dell Inspiron 1525. Get black screen when X should start, cannot boot anymore. However computer remains responsive using SSH.

The issue is critical, as it prevents system from booting up correctly.

Hardware : Intel GMA945.
