Bug Description
Binary package hint: xorg
Connecting external monitor then opening dispay preferences causes lockup when desktop effects are enabled. Once frozen, hard restart was needed.
Can replicate and workaround is to disable desktop effects before opening display preferences.
I understand that intel GM45 graphics cards have a limit on total screen size (2048x2048 I think). To use screen sizes larger than the limit, compiz needs to be disabled.
It looks like the crash is caused by the display manager trying to automatically configure and display this external monitor (creating total screen size over limit) without disabling compiz first.
