Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic on a laptop (Acer Extensa 5220) with X3100 Intel graphic card.
Booting whit kernel 2.6.31-14 (default for karmic) I have always a complete system freeze after about 3 second after login.
I tried the option "vesa" on xorg, but i have a black screen on boot: first I see the logo of Ubuntu (without progress bar), then instead of the logo with the progress bar, I have a black screen. I can switch to consolle with Alt+F6, I can see the write "login", but I can't enter any word.
Booting with the old kernel of Jaunty, the 2.6.28, and with "intel" in xorg, the system will not freeze any more, but is very very slow, but the mouse pointer doesn't work (maybe incompatibility with new X and kernel)
Booting with the old kernel of Jaunty, the 2.6.28, and with "vesa" in xorg, the system will not freeze any more, ant it is fast, but the mouse pointer doesn't work.

Despite from sistem -> aspect-> grafic effects says that compiz was disable (booting with old kernel 2.6.28), I had to make compiz non-executable:
"sudo chmod a-x /usr/bin/compiz"
Now , booting with kernel 2.6.31-14 and defaul xorg.conf (without "vesa"), the system works great.

So, for me, the problem is compiz and driver intel.

Ask me for more information, if needed.

Bye

Sounds like you have the GPU hanging. Take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for how to obtain a batchbuffer dump that is needed to troubleshoot issues like this.

I read the wiki, but I have a question: a the point "How to Get a Batchbuffer Dump (-intel only)", what mean "ssh into the frozen machine "?
May be that I have to swith to consolle? Becouse after the system freeze I can do nothing (neither switch to consolle), I can only restart...

Since the 3D acceleration seems work good (all screensaver works great, and 3D games like Openarena too), I decide to investigate.
I logged into my laptop, than I reactivate compiz with "sudo chmod a+x /usr/bin/compiz", and with the help of "compiz fusion icon" and "compiz config setting manager", I activate one by one the compiz effects. The result is that is the PNG filter, in the section "image loading" (I think the english name is this), that case the total freeze.
I just have to activate compiz with the options that I prefer, without the PNG filter (the others: svg, jpeg, text, works good) and I have no more problems.

So the problem may be in compiz, instead xorg...

Bye

This bug appears to involve a freeze of Xorg, probably due to a GPU
lockup in the kernel drm code, in a version of Ubuntu before
natty (or we couldn't determine the version from the report).

The X team has been investigating GPU lockups in Intel's video driver
during the natty development cycle. Many of these issues are now either
resolved or at least well understood. There are also better tools for
capturing and diagnosing these problems, but these tools are either
unavailable or incomplete in older versions of ubuntu, so debugging this
issue on pre-natty versions is unlikely to be productive. We're closing
out the bug report for this reason.

However, you may not yet be ready to upgrade to natty. It turned out
that a large number of these freezes were solved by updates to the
kernel. Thus, updating your kernel may be a workaround for you.
Updated kernel packages are available a variety of places, such as:

  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

If you find a newer kernel fixes it, and think the fix should be
backported to earlier Ubuntu versions, please file a request against the
linux kernel in Ubuntu, indicating the broken and the fixed kernel
versions.

If it does not fix it, and you do not wish to upgrade to natty, please
follow up through technical support channels (e.g. http://askubuntu.com
is a good place for free support for older Ubuntu versions).

On the other hand, if you find after upgrading to natty and updating to
latest that you still experience GPU lockups, please reproduce the
problem, ssh into the frozen machine, and collect the file
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state and the output of 'dmesg >
dmesg.txt', and attach both to a new bug report.
