Bug Description

I put the laptop to sleep by closing its lid (this feature did not work in Ubuntu Jaunty).
When I tried to restore it, by toggling the power button, I heard the Ubuntu "ready" sound, but the screen staid black/blank. I could still move the mouse.

When I tried to switch to a terminal with CTL+ATL+F1, the screen would appear with weird bars running through it, but I could not access the prompt.

instead of corrupted screen, I get bumped back to logon.

Manually selecting sleep appears to work fine, only closing the lid kicks of the problem, and doesn't set the system to sleep. Big problem if you don't notice as you get cooked laptop in bag.

Thank you for your comments. The X team is pretty sure we know what the
problem is here, and that the fix for it got accidentally dropped from
the 2.6.32-16 kernel.

This should be fixed in a kernel update soon.

dicka: Personally, I've opened bug 553176 as I said above, since I'm tracking this bug for quite a long time now. You may have a look there and see whether that seems to be the same bug, but the best would be to get Apport upload necessary information to a new report, and explain there why you don't mark it as a duplicate of this one.

Often, this kind of X crashes seem to come from a kernel bug; so best would be that Apport detects a kernel oops and report it that way...
