Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

X freezes on log out of KDE 4. ( Do not know the case on GNOME as I am a KDE user).
The screen just turns blank and I cannot even switch to virtual console, though I can ssh to the machine.
Attaching my xorg log and xorg.conf

This bug is invalidated by kernel 2.6.29-02062901-generic which I installed from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29.1/
and xserver-xorg-video-intel from xorg-edgers

We have a PPA with some new tools for debugging X freezes:

  https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-freeze-test

I know how irritating X freezes can be. They're also typically
quite hard to debug, but the information provided by these new
tools should help upstream figure them out.

You can help by doing the following:

 A. Install the PPA packages on Jaunty and boot kernel 2.6.30-rc2
 B. Reproduce your freeze
 C. ssh into the machine and run the steps to collect the info
 D. Attach the tarball of the results to this bug report

With this information, we'll be able to forward your bug upstream.

(For more information on triaging X freeze bugs, see

This freeze is occuring only with 2.6.28 kernel. Its working perfectly in 2.6.29.1 kernel.
But in 2.6.30.rc2 kernel it gives a blank screen but no X freeze. I can switch virtual terminals and caps lock keys works , which was not in the case of 2.6.28 kernel.

There is one more bug I reported with UXA on 28 kernel6.29.1
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/362362

The 2.6.29.1 kernel fixes that also. Since I cannot reproduce with newer kernels than the one shipped with jaunty, I cannot provide any debug information.

Now it is not working even with 2.6.29.1 kernel, guess some update in between broke that behaviour also :(
It freezes on log out on all kernels with message

With gdm this annoying issue gone! Even when logout in KDE 4.2..2.
I have both installed in my Kubuntu 9.04. I was KDE user, but now I am using GNOME. But I will keep eyes on KDE.
I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel from xorg-edgers and with UXA enabled.

Work around is to use
TerminateServer=true
in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc under [X-*-Core]
