Attaching the Xorg log file when the freeze happened.

It happened when I just clicked on the 'K' menu and did nothing special, so looks like it happens randomly.

During the freeze, mouse moves, but no clicks are possible, and Keyboard is completely froze. So the only way out is to do a hard reboot !!

Thanks a lot...

I can confirm this on ThinkPad X200s with GM45. I get hangs roughly once per day.
Would really like the fix for this, as I would prefer UXA over slow EXA...

I have the same problem with 2.6.28. The old 2.6.27 kernels work well. I only use kernels shipped by Ubuntu.

With 2.6.28 the display hangs at about 10 minutes after startup (+-5). The mouse pointer moves, but the mouse buttons and the keyboard do not work. The display is freezed, clock does not work, etc. I used to hit Alt-SysRq K several times, and Ctrl-Alt-Del then. Sometimes I managed to get a console after some SysRq-K and Ctrl-Alt-F1, tried to run X, but I had to kill it again by SysRq-K.

I have ThinkPad R61 with an integrated Intel chipset:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

For me the freeze was using exa, which was enabled by default (jaunty).
After enabling uxa in xorg.conf explicitly, the problem disappeared. (Just the opposite as described by others above, maybe because of the other chipset.)

I just noticed that I get this freeze mostly when I use the keyboard
shortcut to start krunner, but sometimes in other places also. I doubt if
this will be of any help though !!!

Okay, we're getting a bit too much me-too'ing on this bug. Note that one person's freeze is almost indistinguishable from another's, but often caused by very different underlying problems.

In this bug report we will be focusing only on Musthafa's problem. Unless you are 100% certain you have the same bug as him, you should report your problem separately because we won't be looking at freezes unrelated to Mustafa's as part of this bug report.

We have a PPA with some new tools for debugging X freezes:

  https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-freeze-test

I know how irritating X freezes can be. They're also typically
quite hard to debug, but the information provided by these new
tools should help upstream figure them out.

You can help by doing the following:

 A. Install the PPA packages on Jaunty and boot kernel 2.6.30-rc2
 B. Reproduce your freeze
 C. ssh into the machine and run the steps to collect the info
 D. Attach the tarball of the results to this bug report

With this information, we'll be able to forward your bug upstream.

I notice you reported this originally against 2.6.1; we are shipping 2.6.3 in Jaunty, which has a number of UXA fixes in it. Please retest to see if you can reproduce this issue with the released Jaunty.

Hi!

I also get this type of freezes almost once in a hour. There is nothing special I could find out to reproduce the freeze.
Only one thing I would like to mention, when I ssh into the "frozen" machine, an start the mplayer with a avi file. The playback of the sound is hearable on that machine, but no picture.

Side Info: The errors occure since I upgraded to Jaunty, never bevor. For the Tests I am using kernel 2.6.30-rc4.
If there is something else I can do the trace down the error, please let me know, I would be pleased to help.

Thanks in advance.

hax, are you using Kubuntu as well? If not, then report your bug separately, via 'ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel', and also attach your dri_debug.tgz to it.

Thank you Bryce for your reply - indeed I am using Kubuntu.

As the freezers are really annoying I tried to downgrade the intel driver to version 2.4 (according to this: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4). Since than I had no freezers anymore.

Maybe this also helps others. Unfortunately I do not know what improvments I miss now due to the downgrade, but at least for me everything is working for the time.

Thanks, I've been noticing a preponderance of KDE-specific X freezes. I understand that Qt was updated to a not quite stable version in Jaunty, and wonder if downgrading that would make the freezes go away?

We have had several reports of freezes (GPU hangs) on i945 chipsets
(945G, 945GM and 945GME, all of which uses the GMA950 graphics core)
in Karmic. I would like to get some testing going so that we may
identify the cause and give upstream all the information they need
(and possibly some they do not need) so that they can fix this before
Lucid is out. I have set up a wiki page to coordinate the effort:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Lucidi945Freezes . There is a list of test
that I think will be useful in order to isolate where the problem is
and a table where you can fill in your test results. If we're lucky
there is only one underlying problem, and we will probably get
consistent test results. Otherwise, different test results may group
the problems in different categories.

I realize that doing all the tests can be quite time consuming (it
calls for tests on both Karmic and Lucid), and if you are only able to
do some of the tests it would be nice if you could fill in those cells
in the test result table.

My initial guess is that the bug is in mesa, since it seems to be
related to 3D operations. It would be nice if we could also get some
testing of different mesa versions, but I'm not aware of any that are
pre-built yet.

People are currently experiencing freezes on i945 in Karmic (and at least one has verifed it on Lucid as well). However, I think they are all using Gnome, and the freezes started well after this bug was reported. It is possible that this bug has been fixed (the one leading to freezes under KDE) while there is a new one (or more) which leads to freezes under Gnome.

I am not sure if this is the right bug which applies to my problem since there seem to be alot freezes with intel based chipsets and latest kernel / intel driver. However, since I am using KDE and the freeze occures at random (some times several times on one day, on the other not a single time) I am attaching my debug output here.

It happens with and without compositing enabled in kde configuration. The mouse cursor always still works (moving), but everything else is frozen.

I have "Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)"

Currently I am testing patches from

which seem to solve the issue for me when compositing in KDE is turned off. I haven't tested it with compositing turned on yet. I will report back, when I have made more tests on this.
