Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After updating libdrm, libdri, linux-image-generic and some others on Jaunty I couldn't start Xorg anymore.

The log file shows:
(EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory)
(WW) intel(0): /dev/agpgart is either not available, or no memory is available
for allocation. Using pre-allocated memory only.

(II) intel(0): Attempting memory allocation with untiled buffers.
(WW) intel(0): Failed to allocate EXA offscreen memory.
(II) intel(0): Untiled allocation failed.
(EE) intel(0): Couldn't allocate video memory

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

I've attached the full log file.

Booting an older kernel worked, so it seems to be a problem of the kernel module.

Well, I can't really explain it, but it's working again. There was nothing I've done intentional besides starting an older kernel after the new one failed twiece. Now it also works with the new kernel.

@FriedChicken
I have made exactly the same experience with intel gm45.
The XServer always failed to start with 2.6.28-8. After hours to get the problem i started 2.6.28-6 and it works.
To compare where the difference between 2.6.28-6 and 2.6.28-8 is, i started 2.6.28-8 again. AND it works too!

I have both log-files working and not working with 2.6.28-8. Feel free to look it up.
It seems to be a shared-memory-issue.

PS: there is no line missing in Xorg.0.log.non-working !

I had a similar issue with 2.6.28-8 after an update just recently. In my case, udev was broken (I must've interrupted dpkg/apt-get/aptitude during an update, and /sbin/udevadm.upgrade was not properly upgraded and moved to /sbin/udevadm - I had messages reporting the lack of /sbin/udevadm during bootup).

After I manually did dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/udev_139-1_i386.deb, the problem dissapeared and once again X etc worked fine for me.
