total vt switch failure with intel gfx on jaunty

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.5.1-1ubuntu7 in Jaunty (amd64) on a ThinkPad X61 Tablet with GM965 graphics, I can't switch VT from X. When I switch to another VT, I see the Ubuntu splash image and progress bar from the boot screen, and vertical green stripes, as well as some blue garbage near the top of the screen. There's no cursor or console output. Switching back to VT 7 restores a working X11 state.

Nothing interesting appears in dmesg or Xorg.0.log. Here's my hardware info:
