Bug Description
I just tried to install the Kubuntu 8.10 release candidate on a friend's computer, a Dell Inspiron 1100. But when I started the live CD, the computer froze during the login process: When the fourth symbol appeared (the one after the globe, maybe the window manager?) I could not even switch to tty any more.
The same issue appears with Ubuntu 8.10 Beta. I installed it successfully, but when I logged in, the computer froze with a black screen while loading Gnome: The mouse pointer was still there and movable, but the rest did not work: no switching to tty, no killing X... Same problem with failsafe Gnome, Xterminal session works, though. Login on tty works, as well.
I don't know, if xorg is the right package, but as it happens on Gnome and KDE... Any more information I can provide? Trying to recover the xorg0.log file would be possible, but will take me some time as it is not my computer.
Thanks for reporting this bug. /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/ Xorg.0. log.old is needed to find out what can be wrong. Also, when the computer freezes, does Caps Lock still turn on and off the light on the keyboard? Since Xterminal sessions work, can you also upload the Xorg.0.log from one of those sessions?
A tip: If you want to file an X-related bug and make sure to get the right files uploaded without hassle, you can use the command xorg-video- intel
apport-cli -f --package xorg
or
apport-cli -f --package xserver-
to file directly against the intel driver.
