Bug Description

Used Hardy Alternate i386 CD to install Hardy Alpha 6 onto an Intel Santa Rosa. Installer does not configure xserver xorg properly and there is no way for the user to replace/manually edit the xorg.conf file since it is written over at every restart.

What do you mean "does not configure properly"? Do you get an image at all?

The conffile should not be regenerated on boot.

Timo, since Hardy came out, the version of X being used does not allow for manual configuration of video parameters (i.e. "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg"). What happens is that at every reboot X prompts the hardware and automatically configures the video. In this particular case X did not configure the video properly. No image was displayed on screen.
