Bug Description

My laptop is Dell D520 model which i purchased last year. My graphics card is intel 945gm chipset and intel 950 graphics media accelerator . It used to work fine with ubuntu 7.04 but ubuntu 7.10 is not able to detect these card automatically during boot up. During booting sequence it stucks at one place and a message appears "Ubuntu is using low resolution, it is not able to detect screen and graphics card, if you want higher resolution please choose manually". After this i have to manually choose the manufacture of my graphics card and then it takes 10min to display my dektop and then everything is fine. Still it is vey slow opening a window takes a lot of time.
The problem here lies with ubuntu not able to detect graphic cards automatically during boot process.

Could you please recheck it with Gutsy Final Live CD? In Gutsy i810 driver is deprecated and intel driver is used instead.
If you have upgraded it is possible that you have an xorg.conf with Xinerama which isn't supported by new Intel driver anymore. Use xrandr instead.
If it doesn't help please attach the files '/var/log/Xorg.0.log', '/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old' and '~/.xsession-errors' and the output of 'lspci -vvnn'?

Also, here is a patched -intel and patched xserver for Gutsy with fixes that might (or might not) relate to issues like these. Could you test it and let us know if it makes things better, worse, or the same?

Sir,

Thank you for sending the patch files. I
have had already faced lot of problems with gutsy, its graphics is
very slow. It takes almost 10 minutes to load my desktop. Therefore i
have uninstalled it and at present i am using etch ( debian 4.0r1)
which is working fine.
If someone else is facing the same
problem, i will install the patch file and let you know the results.
Thanks again for your response.

Regards,
V.Sayikiran

You'll actually need to test the replacement X server package too, possibly in conjunction with the test Intel driver:

I have the same problem on my HP nx7400 (with i945) - graphic is extremely slow, although it detected my graphic card correctly.. And replacement packages didn't work for me either. Everything used to be fine 7.04. Do you want my logs too?

It would be worthwhile to test Hardy alpha2 or newer to see if the problem still exists.

I strongly believe this is fixed in Hardy. If you can reproduce the problem with Hardy alpha4 or newer, feel free to reopen this bug.
