Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When I install Gutsy Beta on my Dell Inspiron 510m (Intel 855GM) with 1400x1050 screen, the resolution is 1200x1024.

The correct resolution can be manually selected in the Screen Resolution set-up. This is sub-optimal because it means:
a) users have to find and change the setting to use the native resolution of the screen;
b) the login screen is fuzzy and non-native; and
c) (I assume) each new user on the same machine would have to change the setting.

Back when the best solution was the i810 driver with 855resolution, I filed Bug #6271

Originally, 855resolution and its usurper 955resolution required manually setting up configuration files. Paul Sladen and others wrote an excellent patch that made 955resolution determine the correct native resolution and to use that.

It would be great if that code (or an equivalent) could be imported into the Intel driver so that the native resolution for monitors was used, rather than having to manually choose them (although the ability to choose the correct resolution is a huge step forward!)

Sorry, the default resolution is currently 1024x768, not 1200x1024.

This bug also means that I now get stung by Bug #36189 , which I wasn't affected by using 915resolution.
