Bug Description

With 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 a normal boot produces a login where -
black desktop background
no unity panel
a non-functional launcher
nothing can be done

If I boot to recovery > resume then do get an ubuntu session but using llvmpipe. ie.
$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

On this utopic:

linux-image -5 works if I select it at boot.
linux-image -7 wallpaper only. unity won't start, lines full of errors.
linux-image -8 wallpaper only. I presume unity will get same errors.

How do I downgrade back to
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.910-0ubuntu1

I didn't see that choice in synaptic.

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.910-0ubuntu1

couldn't find it either.
Thanks for any hints.

Seems to me to be a race condition. Sometimes booting the 3.16.0-8 level I get wallpaper, no panels. Sometimes unity actually starts like right now.

In any case, Xorg does not seem to have any problem. The screen is displaying if only wallpaper O.K., cursor O.K.

Booted today's utopic .iso at 3.16.0-8, boots to wallpaper no unity panels.

However the desktop icon for ubiquity is there, it does work. Installed O.K. except for the wallpaper only no panels.

Ctrl-Alt-F1 I can try sudo unity. Gets a bunch of errors but I can't find any log with that data to be able to attach it here.

With this intel hardware, utopic linux image -5 and -6 unity comes up fine.

linux image -7 unity always fails. Xorg is running fine, wallpaper, cursor, O.K. Try starting unity and get a bunch of errors.

linux image -8 rarely boots to a running unity. usually fails.

So I boot changing the -8 to -5 and it comes up O.K.

I don't know how to find 2:2.99.914-1-exp1ubuntu1 on this, or how to tell what is in linux-image -5 vs. -8. It's the same ubuntu.

Of course, I'd happily omit 3D support if I could. As far as I know 3D has nothing to do with firefox or google-chrome or office or whatever, only non-functional screen appearance.

Would ubuntu-tweak turn off 3D so I could run?

Thanks.

I think I found it in synaptic:

xserver.xorg.video.intel 2:2.99.914-1-exp1ubuntu1

Since there's only one listed, isn't that used by both the linux image -5 which works and linux-image -7 and -8 which don't?

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz

Lenovo 6234

This is a major company regular pc good performance running well. Runs Win7 fine.

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu Utopic Unicorn (development branch)"
Linux Lenovo2 3.16.0-5-generic #10-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 21 16:16:35 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

works fine for a development release. -6 also works.

-7 Xorg comes up, wallpaper and cursor, unity panels fail.
-8 same thing.

Starting unity from Ctrl-Alt-F1 command line results in errors, unity fails. A number of lines with errors. I can't find a log with these lines. A digital camera picture at 1920x1080 is likely unreadable.

Each day since -7, the daily-live current boots to wallpaper. No panels. The install icon does appear on the screen and the .iso does install, booting the installed utopic wallpaper only, no unity.

How do I post a ubuntu-bug that is valid since the current utopic unity is failing on a regular pc from a major manufacturer?

Thanks.
