Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-i810

Monitors native 1280x1024@60Hz resolution is not detected with i965. Instead, a stretched 1024x768 (Desktop Live CD) or 800x600 (Network install) is displayed.

A bypass is to create a new xorg.conf with 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg'. Of course, this kind of bypass is not possible for beginners and this is still a bug.

Smaller TFT display with native resolution of 1024x768 was detected correctly. Tested with Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn Desktop Live CD 64bit (and Feisty network install). Machine is HP dc7700 Convertible Minitower, display is HP L1906.

This xorg.conf bypasses the problem:

This is the exactly the same attachment as above, but with correct description. Commands were run after I got the correct 1280x1024@60Hz resolution working.

Installation can fail because of this bug.

In some cases, Feisty Live CD boots to 640x480 as the only resolution. This prevents installing, because installer buttons are outside the bottom of the screen. The initial resolution (640x480 or 1024x768) might be dependent on BIOS settings (or positions of stars).

Resolution can't be easily fixed with the bypass described above, because LiveCD X fails to restart properly.

In addition to fixing this i965 bug, maybe Live CD should try harder (take more risks) to get at least 800x600 resolution. If installer is unusable with smaller resolution, what's the point of using it at all?

Feisty Desktop LiveCD seems to work in usable but wrong resolution 1024x768 with "Start or Install Ubuntu in Safe Graphics Mode" (xforcevesa?).

This should definately be fixed in Hardy, which relies more on the driver autoconfiguration. If you can't get the native resolution with Hardy alpha4 or newer, feel free to reopen.
