Bug Description

I was watching a flash video, if that helps.
I experienced a slight hang and switched to tty1 to check for error messages, where I found the following two:

[47315.472858] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* stuck on render ring
[47315.499808] [drm:i915_set_reset_status] *ERROR* render ring hung inside bo (0x1fa3000 ctx 2) at 0x1fa31c8

As I have this happen sometimes (about once a month) without further errors or noticeable effects, I switched back to my graphical session and continued, when the screen went black for a while and then went back to login, as usual when X would be terminated.

Without logging back in, I checked the running processes and there were several user processes of graphical applications still running even though the user wasn't logged in anywhere.

The root cause here is that the VT switch away from X fails [ioctl(xf86Info.consoleFd, VT_RELDISP, 1)] and the recovery mechanism of reacquiring DRM_MASTER also fails. I have no idea why.

If you can provoke this bug, stracing X may be useful.
