Hi,
thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.
In the meantime, you can use Shotwell's viewer.
Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better and greetings for your son =) !

Bug #880923 looks similar and it's in oneiric too. However eog 3.3.5 in precise shows this image.

Hi,

I have the same bug here, with intel gfx.

I found this while searching for a solution: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70527

I don't know if patch commited in Xorg Intel driver at 2013-11-04 15:13:38 is included in Ubuntu xorg-video-intel driver.
It seems a bug should be create for xorg-video-intel package on saucy.

This bug just hit me: Ubuntu 14.04 (up-to-date), Thunderbird 45.0, E(G 10.3.2. Other applications using EOG fail also. Issues message saying signature 0x89 0x50 isn't vald JPEG signature. The filename has .jpg extension. These pictures (there are four) display correctly on both my andrioid phones and on my daughter's android phones. She says it won't open on her Linux laptop, however.

A copy of one of the JPEG files is attached.
