Bug Description

I am using an Sony Vaio TX2 Laptop. After installation of Ubuntu Gnome shows the wrong resolution. The correct one (1366x768) is saved in xorg.conf and it is used but the virtual size is set to 1368x768 so the monitor moves two pixel every time you reach one monitor end.
You can fix this easily through choosing the resolution 1366x768 in settings which works fine but out of the box would be better.
It has something to do with the Gnome resolution component since Kubuntu hasn't this problem out of the box and xorg.conf settings are correct.

Even if I change resolution with "screen resolution" gdm uses still 1368x768 as vsize.

It is very annoying if you change often between external and internal monitor since every time you use the lfp it has the wrong resolution. Is there any possibility to change the gnome-display-properties saved resolution through a script? I haven't found any entry in gconf-editor.

Cool to find someone with the same laptop and problems... and cool to see that Enola did a lot of bug reports for this laptop.

So I have the problem too an the same laptop.

Enola, using i810switch, and its i810rotate command, is the external display jammed ?

I haven't tested it in a while but I think it wouldn't work with higher resolution monitors. ATM I am using the standard i810 driver for LFP and the i810-modesetting driver for external. Interesting point is since I created a script to switch between this drivers the resolution is always correct on LFP. Maybe it works because gnome resolution has a wrong resolution saved (1680x1050) and it must reset which results in the correct resolution but I don't know.

Do you still have this bug? What version of Ubuntu do you use? Could you try on gutsy?

This bug still exists in standard Feisty and Gutsy Tribe 5.
A maybe interesting point is if I change resolution on Gutsy Live CD to 1366x768 I got a black screen. I could move mouse but see nothing. But I think this is a general resolution or compiz problem. After X restart with ctrl + alt + backspace I have the wrong virtual resolution again.

I don't think so since this doesn't happen with Kubuntu afaik. It has something to do with the Gnome "screen resolution". If I correct the wrong resolution with the Gnome tool it works (at least in Feisty) but after logout GDM still has the wrong resolution. Maybe it has something to do with the combination of Gnome with xrandr since xrandr always lists the wrong resolution 1368x768 too and Gnome resolution tool uses the highest possible resolution of xrandr.

Ok, at least it is partially a driver bug since the resolution 1368x768 doesn't appear in xrandr with new Intel driver.

Since Intel driver would fix this problem and according to this bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/135141 a driver update is possible I have posted the needed output to the bug report. If they fix the driver selecting for this laptop in Gutsy they also would fix this one.

This hasn't been fixed for i810 driver but since new Intel driver is used by default in Gutsy there is no real need for a i810 fix.
