Bug Description

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn "does" automatically recognize the wide screen resolution of 1280x800 but the display still appears to be stretched. 855resolution still needs to be run manually and xorg.conf needs to be updated manually to get this working.

Specifics:

Dell 700m, Intel 855GM graphics chipset, resolution 1280x800

This is a simple task for experience users but definitely a chore for newbies.

true, but we need a new upstream version for it to work out-of-the-box

I use 700m, and by installing the 915resolution package on Feisty, it detected the correct resolution and updated the xorg.conf file automagically... No need to do it manually...

Does the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver work for you (remove 915resolution first). This driver is the new one from Intel and should perform better autodetection and handle monitor hotplugging much better. If it does work, I think we can say we've reached the new upstream version :).

Works, yaay!!!

got a clean install done from feisty disk and

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel;

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (this hangs sometimes depending on h/w), worked fine on my dell 700m, failed on an asus.

Could you please recheck it with Gutsy RC or newer? It is shipped with the new Intel driver which should fix this issue. 915resolution is then not needed anymore.
