GX2 video doesn't work in Gutsy

Bug #162807 reported by Steven McCoy on 2007-11-15
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
xserver-xorg-video-geode (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nsc

Ubuntu 7.10, AMD (NSC) GX2 Geode Graphic Chipset

Explained in more detail here: http://muzso.hu/node/3929

The NSC driver broke with the 2.8.2 (Feisty & Gutsy) causing GX2 chipsets to not work, example Xorg log:

(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
(II) Loading sub module "vgahw"
(II) LoadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libvgahw.so
(II) Module vgahw: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 7.2.0, module version = 0.1.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.1
(WW) System lacks support for changing MTRRs

Fatal server error:
xf86MapVidMem: Could not mmap framebuffer (0x00000000,0xfe280000) (Cannot allocate memory)

Note that the chipset cannot change back to text mode on the virtual consoles to debug problems, discussed also on that blog: http://muzso.hu/node/3936

I can confirm the simple fact that I haven't been able to get GX2 video going in Ubuntu (as an LTSP client), either Feisty *or* Gutsy. I wasn't able to troubleshoot because when it came time to load X11, it would just hard-lock in what seemed to be the video mode changing. Sounds like this is probably the cause.

Any work on this would be great to LTSP users, as many new thin clients are coming out with the GX2 chipset (very inexpensive, sexy thin-clients).

I see this also on a FIC mobo with Geode GX chipset

Does the new -geode driver work better?

Could the people affected by this bug please upgrade to Hardy and try the GEODE package that is in hardy-proposed (2.9.0-1ubuntu2.5). Alternately, the bug should also be fixed on Intrepid.

Marking this bug as Invalid, due to incomplete information. Feel free to mark this bug as New again if you can confirm that it wasn't fixed by 2.9.0-1ubuntu2.5 (hardy-proposed), 2.10.1-3build1 (intrepid) or 2.11.0-1 (jaunty).
