Bug Description

I've triggered this a couple of times today.

My .xsession-errors has:

failed to attach dri2 back buffer 4
arrowValue 0
arrowValue 0
arrowValue 0
drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -35. Kernel failed to parse or rejected command stream. See dmesg for more info.

and the dmesg has [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Failed to parse relocation -35!

I think both cases were when changing workspace on kwin (slider animation).
Restarting kwin and it seems to limp along. This is running a Kubuntu environment with chromium (which will have had flash playing), amarok and a few terminals.

Machine is an i7-860 with an HD4350 graphics card (RV710).

Hi Dave,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I've got a repeatable oops that happens when viewing full screen video in flash in chromium, under kwin (with effects enabled) and switching virtual desktop/workspace on ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350].

Hardware: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] in an ASRock P55M Pro motherboard, with an i7-860 CPU, and 8GB RAM, connected to Dell S2409W display via DVI.

OS: Ubuntu Natty upto date as of today, 64bit install, running KDE.

Kernel: Daily build from DRM next from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-next/current/ linux-image-2.6.38-996-generic_2.6.38-996.201103041138_amd64.deb claims to be commit e73f88af66fcc50083fae4b7e1c39b469179a97a

DRM/mesa/etc:
     ii libdrm-radeon1 2.4.23-1ubuntu3
     ii libdrm2 2.4.23-1ubuntu3
     ii libgl1-mesa-dri 7.10.1~git20110215.cc1636b6-0

I've got a 3x3 virtual desktop setup, and am running Chromium and go to youtube and pop a video full screen; and move around the virtual desktop with ctrl-alt-arrows. The oops below was produced twice. I've got a bunch of related symptoms; I installed the daily build because I was getting instances of [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Failed to parse relocation -35! (which I think is EDEADLOCK) doing similar combinations of going in and out of full screen flash.
I've also seen when I try to go into full screen rapid flickering as if it can't decide whether to go into full screen or stay out; once that's triggered that flickering can repeat itself when starting other apps.

This corresponds to Ubuntu bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/717870
and possibly also ubuntu bug 717889

Just checked I can reliably repeat this on the standard Ubuntu Linux major 2.6.38-5-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 22 16:10:15 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The way I can trigger this is a few bits of full screen flash combined with shifting about in my 3x3 virtual desktop in kwin;
this time it seems to have crashed particularly well - see the dmesg log below; Xorg.0.log.old had the following at the end of it:

As requested I tried with a kernel rom the MainlineBuilds set, Linux major 2.6.38-996-generic #201103041138 SMP Fri Mar 4 11:42:25 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux from
linux-image-2.6.38-996-generic_2.6.38-996.201103041138_amd64.deb
in the drm-next directory of http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-next/current

it still fails but the error is different and actually now closer to reliably fatal and also I think now the same as my bug #717889

The test to repeat this is playing a full screen flash youtube video in chromium and then moving about in the virtual desktop in kwin - very reliable failure. Here is the full oops that is now produced:

I could turn to console and quickyl copy the logfiles to my home directory.. and the kernel log shows 1000 of lines I hope you guys can use.. And I think this is a radeon kernel bug in my opinion..
And I really hope they can fix this..

Olivier Mehani (shtrom) wrote : Re: RV710: [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Failed to parse relocation -35!

I had the same error message when using fast user switching. This is with Precise on a MSI WindBox DC-100 (Radeon HD 6320), so not exactly the same circumstances, but this got fixed installing libdrm-radeon1_2.4.46+git20130702.c6d73cfe-0ubuntu0sarvatt~precise (and the rest of the updated pakages) from the xorg-edgers PPA.

According to [0], commit 0980633afd9c7eecc0c75ef3bea4d3c6b7aa1898 in libdrm should be the reason why this is fixed.

Dave Gilbert, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

Hi,

During my migration from 10.04 to 12.04, gdm freezes on each try to startup just after logging.

FYI, a simple user cannot understand what's happens.

To solved my problem :
CTRL + ALT + F1
login with my user
sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates
sudo apt-get remove fglrx* fglrx-amdcccle
reboot

I don't mind 3D features but for simple users why don't simply downgrade if the support is not available for ATI chip.
I prefer to know newbies that tried to upgrade Ubuntu will have a downgraded display desktop rather than freezed screen.
