the free ati driver does not support the ATi Mobility Radeon X1300 - vesa used as fallback

Bug Description

I use a HP nc6400 laptop. When installing Edgy, the only X driver that was usable was the vesa driver. When trying the ati driver, X would not start (no screens). After installing the fglrx driver it worked. fglrx identified the video adapter as such:

(WW) fglrx: More than one matching Device section for instances
(BusID: PCI:1:0:0) found: ATI Technologies, Mobility Radeon X1300
(--) Chipset MOBILITY RADEON X1300 (M52 714A) found.

Possibly related is Bug #68075, which talks about a similar card producing "unknown video card" with lspci.

Uh, sorry, this was not meant to go to linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17, but to xserver-xorg-video-ati, and I am positive I had entered this package name. No idea why it ended up here, and cannot find how to change that now. Please reassing, thanks.

Changing package to xserver-xorg-video-ati, and marking as confirmed. AMD/ATI has not yet allowed an already-done initial support to be incorporated into X.org, that's why there's no support at all. Please contact AMD/ATI on the issue, or switch to open-source friendly graphics maker (Intel's integrated graphics are the best option currently).

Changed in xorg:
