Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When I use Ubuntu with `xserver-xorg-video-ati` driver fan is allways working. I also have *-radeon driver. When I switch to fglrx driver fan works at normal speed. Fan speed does not seem to be connected to desktop effects (after switching them off there is no improvement).

I use Dell studio 15 with Radeon Mobility card installed.

In my case, the fan is revving in a regular pattern. About every five seconds it sounds like it's speeding up, then slows back down a second later. It's really quite annoying, not to mention what it is doing to the battery life. I would actually rather that it just run at a constant speed.

This seems to be related to compiz. When an effect is used the cycling starts up. If I rest on a screen for a while it seems to stay more idle.

Actually, my problem is likely different than yours. Your issue is that the radeon card is still active, even if you are not using the driver.

I switch off the graphics card I'm not using with a startup script:

# disable radeon card
echo DIGD > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

# disable intel card
echo DDIS > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

Hey Jacek,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)
