Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Desktop x86 on my Netbook.
(Medion Akoya E1312)
Everything works pretty fine, except when I pull out the power-cable and then start the netbook, the graphical interface of GNOME just loads in parts or never. So I just see the pink background image. From
time to time (from restart to restart) I also see one of the
two panels, but I am not able to use them or click to provoke any
action.
When I then connect the power-cable again and restart - everything is working fine
again...
This is really annoying and it seems to be a bug related to any power
management or xorg thing.
Also I experienced, that I was not able to install Ubuntu, unless I
connected the power-cable to the netbook while installation.
Without the power-cable the installation broke and the gui freezed.

This problem seems to be related to the GNOME desktop and the power management, because under XFCE this bug does not appear.

Hi I am having a similar problem but with Ubuntu 10.10

uname -a
Linux 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:45:36 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I got it fixed by changing all power management options under section "On Battery" to never and unchecked the "sping down hard disks when possible" option.

My laptop is a dell 1558, I saw a similar report under redhat https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=624212

This issue only occurred when I was on battery. When the cable was plugged in I could work without problems.

This is also similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/574093

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Victor Bendig

Hey ncfiedler,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)
