With standard configuration i hear sound from gdm, but showed console.

I create new xorg.cong by coping xorg failsafe file. and login by startx.

Getting similar issues with the 5650. From my post on the Ubuntu forums

<quote>atombios stuck executing CB9E
I have a very strange issue. Whenever I logout of my Gnome session I am taken to a console where I see an error message that keeps repeating (see image here http://goo.gl/U2R0y ): The key thing is says is: "atombios stuck executing CB9E".
After about 30-45 seconds of watching the text, it goes back into GDM where I can log in normally.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64bit
My laptop is an Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG
The Video Card (which I suspect the issue is coming from) is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650.

Does anyone have a clue as to what the issue could be? If so, I would appreciate any advice on how to get rid of it.</quote>

Question regarding the potential workaround mentioned by Denis Pauk (post #6) - will it cause any issues installing the Natty Kernel build on top of Meerkat 10.10?

This bug was fixed upstream in kernel 2.6.37. From the changelog:

commit a93f344d3c04e4b84490c65f2a574387c593be40
Author: Alex Deucher

drm/radeon/kms: reorder display resume to avoid problems

On resume, we were attemping to unblank the displays before the
timing and plls had be reprogrammed which led to atom timeouts
waiting for things that are not yet programmed. Re-program
the mode first, then reset the dpms state.

This fixes the infamous atombios timeouts on resume.

Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" is using the 2.6.38 kernel.

This patch was also included upstream in kernel 2.6.36.3. As Denis mentioned in comment #6 that he could no longer reproduce the bug with the Ubuntu mainline 2.6.36.1-natty kernel I suspect he either got lucky or Ubuntu backported the patch.

Anyway, it's fixed now. I've never attempted to install a newer kernel version on an Ubuntu release, but I've read about other people doing it without problems. If you want to try it, it is probably wiser to use the 2.6.36.x series rather than the 2.6.38.x series - you are less likely to need a newer version of libdrm.
