Bug Description

If you boot a Dell Optiplex GX 620 with an ATI X600 PCIE (RV370 5B62) from an Ubuntu Edgy Eft Knot 2 Desktop CD you can choose which flavor you want to boot and you can see the first splash screen. After the step "Start ACPI" the screen turns blank. You can't switch to text console. Reboot via CTRL+ALT+DEL is not possible. Same happens if you choose the "safe graphics" mode and/or a VGA 640*408 16 color mode.

At the moment this behavior is a real showstopper.

The problem also occurs if you install Edgy with an alternate install CD. The problem seems to be in xserver-xorg-video-ati. If you boot the PC in single mode and do an dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and change the video card from ati to vesa the desktop starts at the next reboot. Maybe the same bug as #28925 in Dapper?

I believe I have the same problem, was a showstopper for me as well, I have an Ati X700 PCIE in my laptop. But the screen did not go blank, but first displayed lots of vertical lines, then lots of horizontal lines before giving up and displaying a badly mangled X dialog that X couldn't be started.

anyway, shouldn't safe mode still use vesa drivers instead of ati? The open source drivers have never really worked for me, and I doubt they will in the near future.

Can i force the install CD to use the vesa driver? then I'd like to try it out again, as I'm desperate to use Monodevelop 0.11.
