I have had another occurance of the screen corruption. This time it was a simple mouse movement.

Attached is an "artistic impression" of how the screen looked.

And then after about a minute the "image" started to fading - more or less as in attached but not quite the perfect square.
After this the image then got progressively lighter - (lightgrey to white) but not fading out completely.

I confirm that same issue occurs for my thinkpad x31 after upgrading to 10.04 beta-1. Screen freezes randomly, displays coloured vertical and horizontal bars. Reset required after crash.

Is this a regression? I.e., did it work previously on Lucid and only occurred after a recent update? If so, about when did you first notice it?

I've been having similar problems when smooth scrolling but not when fast scrolling, so presumably it has to do with some sort of acceleration problem in the driver. I've been having these problems with every version of Lucid so far. I did not have them with Karmic. I can trigger video corruption reliably by grabbing the scroll bar in firefox or chromium and moving it quickly. Once corruption occurs it becomes prevasive.

Here's a photo of the corruption.

aaaaaaand another pic of the corruption, this showing damage to fonts. the mouse pointer also becomes a big block (perhaps 100px or so?) of noise. having more windows open at once makes it happen easier, e.g. firefox and chromium.

This all happens on my Gateway 3201u. (M690E chipset) http://support.gateway.com/s/notebook/2009/gateway/lt/lt31/LT31sp2.shtml
I can provide more info if necessary, just holler.

@Paul Dunn - The PCI id for your graphics chip was recently added to upstream kernels 2.6.34.3 and 2.6.35.1. Can you try the Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" alpha 3 Live CD and see if the issue is resolved?

From the attached photos I think Paul and drink have different issues.

Anyway, official support for Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" on the desktop and for all editions of Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" has ended. If this issue is still occurring on Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" please file a new bug report so that we can get updated system logs and info.
