On all screen buttons, I have lines/ dots in the dialog boxes

Bug Description
When I first open programs I have these graphic lines and/or dots in all the dialog boxes like: ok, apply, cancel. When I move the mouse over them they disappear but when I open anything else they come right back. So just wondering how to fix this, I have a HP ze5730us laptop computer.

A quick web search suggests that the laptop in question has a ATI Mobility Radeon 4x AGP graphics chipset in it.
I can confirm that a similar rendering error occurs on a Dell Precision WorkStation 340 which has a dualhead ATi card reported by lspci as: Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE].
I am not running the ATi binary drivers, so I suspect this is a bug in the xorg radeon driver.
