Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

After running for a few minutes (amount of time varies, sometimes 5 minutes after login, sometimes an hour), X freezes and becomes unresponsive. Often the mouse pointer still responds to movement but cannot select anything. It is possible to SSH in from a remote machine and see that Xorg is using 100% CPU.

Hi Jamie,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 450669

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 450669 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug xorg

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/450669

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

tiago, you should file a new bug report rather than me-to onto this one. Your pictures don't match the original description, and besides this bug report is closed.

I would recommend testing a natty livecd and see if you can reproduce the issue. If you can, then file the bug using the command `ubuntu-bug xorg` from a natty session.

If you're just looking for a workaround to the problem, you might try asking at askubuntu.com for technical support.

Hello Bryce Harrington,

Don't work! The same error.

mirror = error
single external monitor - 1650 x 1080 = error
dual head monitor - 1650 x 1080 and 1280 x 1024 = error
single notebook lcd monitor - 1024 x 768 = Ok!

I'm seeing this problem on Natty as well.

This is my first post on this site and I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place for it, so apologies in advance if it isn't but....

I think my problem on an Asus Pundit P1-PH1 Radion Express 200 was the same. It was freezing after a random time between 5 minutes and two hours. I found the fix here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1589135

I disabled 'Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology' in the BIOS and there were no more problems.
