Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

X freezes when I access the URL http://demo.vhcs.net/fast_login.php?action=admin with Firefox. The problem also occurs with the Firefox 3.5 Beta and Epiphany. To recover I have to use the power button to reset the computer. I have been able reproduce this problem every time I try and access this URL.

I am using Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 with all updates.

cant repro on karmic + RV350 w/ -radeon + FF 3.0.10

However, since I don't have any login to this page I just get the login page. I assume you're getting a different webpage than the login page?

Is there anything special with this webpage? Any really big images on it or so? Is there any other page that consistently hangs xorg and what doesn't require login?

Does this issue happen even if you turn off desktop 3D effects under System::Preferences::Appearence?

Sorry I posted the wrong URL, this one provides an auto login which then redirects to that original URL:

http://demo.vhcs.net/fast_login.php?action=admin

I tested this URL on another computer with Jaunty + ATI + FF and it worked fine.

The computer that it fails on is an older HP nc4010 notebook. I installed the Opera web browser and it does not have the same problem. 3D Effects are already disabled. There is no other page that it consistently freezes on but I have had the odd random freeze since upgrading to Jaunty. I have been running Jaunty since it went RC. I just have not noticed anything consistent/reproducible until now.

It might be time to get a new laptop :)

Tried again with the new URL, still can't repro on the two configs I mentioned earlier. Our ATI cards are slightly different though so that doesn't tell us much.

@Bjorn, does your computer hang/freeze whenever you visit the website http://mundoplus.tv/ using Firefox?

Are you still having problems with this issue? I notice you have an AGP card, and these symptoms are not uncommon with AGP due to conflicts between the AGP card and the motherboard's host bridge, and can be worked around by trying different AGPMode settings.

Please check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#ATI%20AGP%20Mode%20Quirk and report back if it helps.

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you
reported?

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908/+listing-archive-extra

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
