Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

hello,

i make this report according to the bug #150519.
So i have an ibm t42 with "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] [1002:4c57]" it is a 32mb video card (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ATI_Mobility_Radeon_7500). This bug is present under intrepid and now jaunty.

Lets answer the questions:

  * What color is the play window?
the windows is green on all the player (vlc, totem gstreamer, mplayer, miro xine)
   * Out of 10 tries, how many times did it show the symptom?
I think ten times
   * What happens if you use Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"? EXA?
No changes for this problem.
   * What happens if Desktop Effects is turned off? on?
No change.
   * What happens if AIGLX is disabled? enabled?
No change.
   * What happens if you set the depth to 16bpp? 24bpp? 32bpp?
24bpp it work, the problem is only with 16 bpp.
   * Does using x11 instead of xv make the green screen go away?
yes, it work for X11 and opengl.
   * Does changing the AGPMode option help?
     Possible values include 1, 2, 4, 8.
No change.
   * Does using Option "VideoKey" "0x01" help?
No change.

I made my bug a duplicate of this.
My hardware: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY [1002:4c59]

For the questions, the answers are pretty much the same, except for the players
mplyer and xine gave blue screen for me.

I've found a workaround for the issue:
run gstreamer-properties
under Video, select X11/Xshm/Xv for plugin, and Radeon Textured Video as device, instead of ATI Radeon Video Overlay

It work also for me, but i don t know how to configure the other player (vlc, mplayer ) to use it.

I have also a lot of other problem with the depth to 16bpp:

-i lost the border of the windows when i activate compiz (work with the depth to 24bpp)
-stellarium work very bad ( less than 10 fps with the depth to 16bpp and 40fps with the depth to 24bpp)

Can you confirm that a.tom so i can report this bug.
thanks

jb

i can confirm this, adding that xfwm compositioning is working

"-stellarium work very bad ( less than 10 fps with the depth to 16bpp and 40fps with the depth to 24bpp)"
i can confirm this too, i even got worse fps numbers than you

i have interesting news:
i reinstalled my system to a full xubuntu install, and the bug is gone. mplayer and totem gives xv output without any problems at 16 bits. the xorg.conf is the same that was on the previous isntall. (it was a vanilla xfce desktop on a cli ubuntu)
i have no idea what can be in the background

We've a (related?) problem when playing video's in LTSP on our HP t5735 thin clients, exactly like the problem described in:

Details:

 * no compiz
 * no /etc/X11/xorg.conf

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you
reported?

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908/+listing-archive-extra

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.

sorry for the delayed answer, i only had time on this weekend for testing
i downloaded karmic alpha 5, as i understand your modified driver is included in it by default
the original issue is gone, xv output is fine on 16 bits with totem, vlc and mplayer too

but:
gnome-mplayer is unstable on both 16 and 24 bits (garbage on the video here and there, screen becoming white on switching to fullscreen, etc)
on 16 bits, the mplayer window (the one with the player buttons and stuff) is black with all the skins, so it's only partially usable (through right clicking)

the compiz issue for jean-baptiste
visual effects are set to normal from off automatically upon changing to 16 bits, it's working, but a bit slow and leaves garbage

and i had some pulseaudio crashing while testing the videos

cheers
