After the bootup with the live CD, the Desktop ran without compositing enabled. The website ran fine, although in Konqueror (couldn't install firefox in the live CD environment).
As soon as I enabled the compositing effects, the screen froze with the mouse moving jerkily.

Status: confirmed with Live CD

$ lspci -nn| grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10] [1002:4e50]

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf|grep Driver
produced no output, so I assume it used the ati driver
