Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

After updating to Jaunty, some flickering occurs on the right hand side of the screen, especially when switching applications. This is on Lenovo ThinkPad T60 with ATI Mobility Radeon X1300, with the practically empty xorg.conf automatically created when installing Intrepid. Screen did not flicker in Intrepid, only after the upgrade.

Hi jaript,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old) from after reproducing the issue?

I have the exact same issue after upgrading from intrepid to jaunty on my t60 with x1300 Mobility. I notice especially when scrolling anywhere on screen, the flicker is always on that right hand side.

My xorg.conf here too.

This seems to be related to EXA acceleration; setting AccelMethod to XAA stopped the flickering.

Setting "MigrationHeuristic" to "greedy" fixes the flicker too. Still, the desktop loads considerably slower than in Intrepid, which seems to be related to this as well. Downgrading to Intrepid xserver-xorg-video-radeon makes it a lot faster.

I can confirm that setting AccelMethod to XAA stopped the flickering. Haven't tried setting "MigrationHeuristic" to "greedy", or downgrading yet. I'm trying to figure out the speed differences from Intrepid xserver. FWIW, I'm getting the same fpu rate from glxgears, not that that's the most accurate measure of anything. But it's comparable now to what I had before.

koid@luyipa:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
5741 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1148.090 FPS
5983 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1196.553 FPS
5976 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1195.048 FPS
6100 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1219.956 FPS

Thanks for the workarounds for now.

Actually I was referring to slowness in loading the desktop rather than rendering. I thought this'd be due to the new Gnome but it is considerably faster with the xorg from Intrepid. Odd. Have you noticed the same?

Changing from EXA to XAA does not fix it for me. Still flickering and sometimes "black" screens.

Switching from radeon to radeonhd driver does solve this "flicker" and "black" screens (its like switching to console and back to X occuring randomly verfy often).
