[RV770 HD 4850] Output DVI-I_2/analog enabled but has no modes

I encounter the error "Radeon (0): Output DVI-0 enabled but has no modes" when trying to boot into Jaunty using either the ati or Radeonhd drivers.

I also encountered a similar error when trying to use the livecd. After unsuccessfully trying to load up, I am sent to the terminal with an error code "Output DVI-I_2/analog enabled but has no modes" The only way of viewing the livecd or a proper installation was to go into low graphics mode (vesa)

If I go into display settings, it comes up with "Monitor: Unknown" and a refresh rate of 0.

I am running Jaunty Alpha 3 AMD64, using a Ati Radeon 4850HD card with a HP Ultra VGA 1280 monitor attached to the video card with a vga to dvi adapter

I have not encountered this problem with either Hardy or Intrepid installations in the past

If you manage to get a logfile from it (/var/log/Xorg.0.log), please attach it to this bug. It should be in the live session, but perhaps a bit hard to copy elsewhere..

Both this bug and bug 325394 are probably due to incomplete support for r7xx chips in the current -ati. Hopefully we'll see code from upstream for this in time for jaunty. We'll see.

I've just now uploaded the 6.11.0 driver to Jaunty, and it claims to have a lot of improvements for output handling so my guess is that it may fix this issue. Would you mind re-testing against current Jaunty and let me know whether the issue is fixed now? Thanks ahead of time.

Unfortunately things went from bad to worse. I cant seem to successfully get into gnome anymore.

At the moment I see the loading cursor for a couple of seconds, then the screen flickers and a dialog box that says:
"The greeter application appears to be crashing. Attempting to use a different one" appears

If I click ok, the screen flickers and then the process repeats until I get a blue screen stating:
"The display server server has been shut down 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2 minutes before trying again on display: 0"

I ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg from the terminal with no success.

Look in /var/log/gdm/ for files with error messages, or maybe in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log[.old] files.

After running sudo apt-get update and installing the updates a couple of days later, the computer now boots into ubuntu with no error messages. Might of been an unrelated problem but it now seems to be fixed. Thank you for all of your help :)

Reporter indicates in the downstream bug that the issue has gone away with the latest driver.

mattz, good to hear your problem has gone away with latest updates.

Paul, I have to assume you have a separate problem so ask that you file a new bug - in any case upstream requires one bug report per person so please file a new report.

Hi Bryce, unfortunately I just realised that those recent updates caused my xorg.conf file to go back to vesa, hence why I haven't been getting those errors anymore.

I just switched back to ati and when I try to boot into ubuntu with 'ati' in my xorg.conf file, it first comes up with "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode"

then it comes up with the error popup "The greeter application appears to be crashing. Attempting to use a different one."

Not true - he reported it working with the vesa driver. I'd reopen it if I were you.

Looks like he's actually using radeonhd.

Version 1.2.4 is too old, please retry with newer 1.3.0.
Also, the config seem to have a configured monitor. Retry with out the
  Monitor "Monitor[0]"
or equivalent line in the Screen section.

Does this issue occur with the preferred ati driver (xf86-vide-ati)? If so, please move this to the Driver/Radeon component.

Development of radeonhd has pretty much halted and development focus is on the ati driver. Please see http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonhd

If the issue does not exist in the ati driver (or if there is no response to this message), this bug will be closed as WONTFIX unless someone contributes a patch.
