The S-video cable is able to be detected using the following command
xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1
It would be nicer if one did not have to do this command.

If I use the mirror option I can get the same output on the LCD and TV.
If I use dual monitor with the LCD as screen 0 and the TV as screen 1, the laptop becomes unresponsive.
There is also obvious corruption on the TV screen's output in dual monitor mode.
The laptop is still accessible remotely via SSH, and "/etc/init.d/gdm restart" via the ssh session brings the system back to life.
