Bug Description

I use Intrepid Ubuntu, with Ati R280 (radeon 9250, 128MB). Everytime I use a native openGL 3d game, like trigger, or briquolo, after a while, my system freezes completely. Like, I can't restart X with CNTRL-ALT-Backspace, nor can I go to a tty with cntrl-F1. I can only reset.

I tried it with and without compiz. I even tried it with and without some (accelmethod and migrationHeuristic) options in my xorg.conf (by (un)commenting them with # and restarting X):

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
 Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
EndSection

I have seen other bug-reports about Nvidia doing the same, and wine, but they appear to be fixed in gutsy or hardy, but I did not have problems in gutsy nor hardy, but now i Do in intrepid...

Could not reproduce on a Mobility Radeon 9000. Setting package to xserver-xorg-video-ati (xserver-xorg-driver-ati is deprecated, currently only used in Dapper).

Did you play a 3d game for a few minutes? It does not happen immediately, but after a while (like, 4 minutes or so)

Yes, I did, however I am using a different video card than you are, though we are using the same driver. It is possible the bug only appears on your video card. The report is still open and available for others to confirm.

Thanks for your bug report. Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#ATI%20AGP%20Mode%20Quirk and try different AGPMode settings.

It seems setting AGPmode to 4 stops the trouble. I have to play a whole dvd at once to see if this problem also disappeared

If it does, I will post (as said in this wiki-link) the correct settings with my card/driver/northbridge combination.
It seems good for now, didn't have a lock up with lots op openGL-games since I tried AGPmode on 4.

THanks!

But, resuming, it seems to be a bug in the default settings of the driver in my combination?

Daniel, I don't see why you closed the bug. We are still waiting for the information from warjowuch.

Ok, in the meantime I have watched several movies, one DVD and a few avi's. No Crashes at all, nor with openGL-games.
So I guess my problem is solved.

But: the wiki entry seems to ask for information. Like my northbridge and VGA-controller and the appropriate settings. Where can I post this information?
Can this be used for autoconfiguration for next versions of the driver or so?

Anyway, the output they ask:
* bugno launchpad #312693
  AGPMode needed: 4
Model: Self-built computer, MSI K6V-LSR mobo, Sempron 2400+
Host Bridge: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8377 [KT400/KT600 AGP] Host Bridge [1106:3189] (rev 80)
Graphics Card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] [1002:5960] (rev 01)
  HW changes: None
  BIOS: AGP-mode setting to AUTO

Thanks. The information just needs to be posted here, like you did. Autoconfiguration for your specific combination can then be added to the driver itself.

We also need the card subsystem information (from lspci -nnvv | grep -A1 "VGA compatible controller"). This was not so clear in the wiki example so I updated it.

The output you asked, I guess it's about the 2nd sentence :)

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] [1002:5960] (rev 01)

So, in total:
AGPMode needed: 4
Model: Self-built computer, MSI K6V-LSR mobo, Sempron 2400+
Host Bridge: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8377 [KT400/KT600 AGP] Host Bridge [1106:3189] (rev 80)
Graphics Card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] [1002:5960] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Device [1462:0380]
  HW changes: None
  BIOS: AGP-mode setting to AUTO

Cool stuff, this way of helping out, and being helped at the same time.
Thanks!

Thanks. I will prepare a patch that we can send upstream and also apply to the Ubuntu package.

The patch is now in upstream git:

I made a test package for Intrepid in my PPA https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive (xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.10.0.99+git20090114.0e69068a-0ubuntu0tormod~intrepid) that you can test - without using AGPMode in xorg.conf of course.

Hi there,
I have tested your packages (the -ati as well as the -radeon), I installed them both together.

I removed the AGPmode option from my xorg.conf and I observed no crashes when watching movies.

But, however, I did see a lag in the videopart of the movies I watched.
Every 8 seconds or so, a slight stutter in the video-part of the movie, like a few frames where missing at that point and totem-xine stayed on that moment until it found its next.

Watching tv (tvtime) is all ok.
So, it's not yet a total "go" from my side.

However, thanks for the great work, the crash-thing is ok now!
