Bug Description

I have a Powercolor ATI X800GT 256Mo.
It's detected by Ubuntu Hoary (final) installer and Ubuntu Dapper (Flight 1)
installer as a X800SE.
The installer auto-choose the "ati" driver for xorg, bu this driver doesn't
work, so that when xserver
starts for the first time after installing Ubuntu (Hoary Final or Dapper Flight
1), xserver crashes.
It Oops, saying that it can't launch.

To bypass this problem, I just edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the "ati"
driver by "vesa"n then
I restart xserver (with /etc/init.d/gdm restart) and it works perfectly !
If I apt-get and install fglrx-driver-xorg, I can also use "fglrx" driver, it
works perfectly too
(with 3D accel of course).

I can reproduce this bug, I have produced it many times.
I can't say what make the crash exactly : X800SE detection or non functionnal
"ati" driver
for X800 series (or even installer driver choosing problem ?).

This problem is relatively annoying for new users because with an X800GT,
xserver crashes just after
the installation ... so I suggest to make xorg detecting X800Gt as X800GT and
applying it the "vesa" driver, or
"fglrx" if it's integrated.

Hi Pierre,

Is this still an issue for you? If yes, could you please attach a log from a crashed session as requested before?

Thank you for reporting this bug.

Hi there !

This is still an issue with Dapper Flight 7 on my computer, corrected with
the same way : changing "ati" to "vesa" in xorg conf, restarting gdm,
downloading fglrx packet, changing "vesa" to "fglrx" in xorg conf, restaring
gdm.

What log do you want me to send you ?
Where can I find it ?

I'll put "ati" again as Dapper detects then I'll send you what you need, as
soon as you'll have said to me what do you need !

Pierre,

Daniel Stone requested the following, which is what I referred to, when I said "as requested before":

please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log from a crashed session using the standard
'ati' driver (not fglrx).

Thank you.

Hi again !

Sorry, it's my mistake.
So here is the log.
I must add that I've tried "radeon" driver with success but only 640x480
resolution.
"fgrlx" works perfectly.

Details about the card :
Powercolor ATI Radeon X800GT 256 Mo
The gpu is recognized by ATI drivers (Catalyst, Windows) as R423 (like
Radeon X800SE), but it's R480.
It's the same core as X800XT PE but surely core-locked (less pixel pipes)

I suspect this is a duplicate of bug #30284. attaching the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file might verify this. Also, is the card PCI-Express, and do you know if specifying the "radeon" driver in the xorg.conf file lets your run an X-windows environment?

Umm...oops. This is a duplicate of bug #32515. 30284 can't be fixed with the radeon or fglrx drivers. My mad.
