the sourcepackage i guess is glxinfo

i have this problem since tribe 5 ! i have an acer laptop with an ati radeon 9700 mobile card!

the system freezes after about 20 sec after i have logged in ! the only log i have is the crashfile ... the logs don't mention anything !

since the system freezes i cannot use the system at all right now --> powerswitch

i am using the free radeon driver ! not the fglrx driver !

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

Does it crash with the -ati (radeon) driver or with fglrx? I don't get your comments to make any sense with what the files show.

it crashes with the autodetection xorg.conf ...

if i edit the autodetection xorg.conf and add section device ... "radeon" it crashes

if i use the xorg.conf i still have from gutsy --> section device "fglrx" the system runs without any problem ... but the driver is not working ( fglrxinfo says mesa ) although i have installed the xserver-xorg-fglrx package !

i hope i helped you with this information !

Please try a Device Section with only:
 Driver "ati"
 Option "BusType" "PCI"

Of course, keep the Identifier line also.

glxinfo does not crash now as long as i don't start compiz --> glxinfo and compiz.real crash !

Does the whole system freeze now with compiz? Compiz makes many things crash, so this can be another problem than what you saw initially.

system does not freeze anymore !

glxinfo and compiz only crashes when i try to enable compiz !

either way it does crash with the autodetection file --> guess that should not happen .... in the final release ?

It should not crash for sure :) Can you instead of
 Option "BusType" "PCI"
try this option, please:
 Option "AGPMode" "1"

1 ) System does not freeze
2 ) tried to enable compiz --> worked but with 2 fps ( really slow -> not usable although it worked great in gutsy ! )
3 ) tried glxinfo in terminal -> direct rendering no and then compiz crashed ?? although i have already disabled it !

just in case i add my xorg.conf file ... that i am using right now !

Do you need those extra options in your xorg.conf?
 Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
 Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Please try without them. Try also the Ubuntu 8.04 live CD.

Uninstall compiz if you're not able to disable it. Please attach a new Xorg.0.log

I think I have the same problem.

Some alpha-versions worked, then there was an update and after that, x started crashing a few seconds after login. Sometimes, the logon-sound stuck in a loop.
This happened using the live-cd, too.

The "stable" version worked fine, but many weeks ago, there was an update and since then, it crashes again.
I use a xorg.conf-file which I copied from another ubuntu-system. I tried "ati" and "fglrx".

When the system crashes, it sometimes seems to have high cpu load (fan spins up), but this is not always the case.
I can't switch to a console or terminate x. The system is unreachable (network).
Sometimes the screen turns dark (only backlight remains).
Sometimes the picture is corrupted (strange lines or colored fields, white screen...)
Sometimes the lcd-panel is switched off while the backlight stays on (picture slowly turns into white).
Sometimes I still can move the mouse cursor.

I could not find any error-logs until now.

I disabled desktop-effects and the system worked. But when executing glxinfo, it crashed again. Same happend with glxgears.
I tried the suggested Options in xorg.conf.

The affected machine is: Acer travelmate 4001lmi with mobility radeon 9700/64MB.

Same problem here?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/228633

I already did a bug report while using the alpha version:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/203007
(I tried the proprietary drivers and they crashed, too.....maybe it has nothing to do with the drivers?)

I'm getting the same problem as well. None of the solutions I've tried have seemed to be permanent. System specs and debugging attempts are here:

Nvidia card, and the whole system freezes about 4 seconds after hitting return on my password. Mouse stops responding, and only hard reset will work. After re-installing from scratch and removing what I thought might be a bad memory module the system was fine for days. Then, tonight, I enabled the security updates, did them all, and rebooted, and now it's back in the same
failure mode as before. I'd love to know which package changed to cause the problem.

I again tried different drivers with options I took from the driver's documentation but I could not work out how to get around this bug.
As long as I do not use any 3d, the system is stable.

But if I do not touch the notebook for a few minutes, the screen slowly fades out and the system crashes.
It crashes immediately when I open the screen-saver applet to turn of the screensaver (it uses 3d).

I started glxgears, glxheads and glxinfo and the system did not crash for some minutes.
Another time, I started glxinfo and the screen went black immediately, another time the system freezed.
The last output of glxinfo:
name of display: :0.0

Since that happens with ati, fglrx and radeon it does not seam to be driver-related?

I experienced the same problem with Fedora 9. Freezes after login or screen turns black. Fan sometimes keeps on spinning.
