Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Recently, I've successfully upgraded from feisty to gutsy.
Everything is great except xvideo.

When playing video using xvideo, I can see only black screen.
Totem or mplayer does not print any failure messages but just show black screen.
I verified it using gstreamer-properties.
(gstreamer-properties -> Video -> xvimagesink test)

I'm not using any visual effects.
Version of xserver-xorg-video-ati is 1:6.7.195-1ubuntu1.
xdpyinfo includes XVideo extension.
xvinfo shows lots of output.
I'm using 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R200 QL [Radeon 8500 LE]

Thank you.

I found that sometimes XVideo works.
I'll find the reason why often it fails to work.

Thanks.

I found the reason.
This occurred when I connected the both of D-BUS and DVI cable to monitor.
XV works with D-BUS and doesn't work with DVI.
I don't know this situation is meant to be or not.

If XV works with D-BUS and works with DVI, (but not with both concurrently, of course),
it's perfect.

But I know this is a quite stupid situation.
Sorry for bothering you.

Right, Xv only works on one screen at a time or so..

I have an x800xl with dualhead and Gutsy's free radeon driver.

I find Xv to work (only on one screen at a time, but whatever) for some random amount of attempts during a session. After that, apparently the Xv port fails to be released for use by new clients, even after making sure the old player instances are dead.

The problem persists independent of video player; mplayer in particular gives this complaint:
Xv: could not grab port 65
Could not find free Xvideo port - maybe another process is already using it.
Close all video applications, and try again. If that does not help,
see 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers.
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

This is highly detrimental to proper video playback, and was a problem in Feisty too (I recall reporting it, but apparently not, or maybe somewhere else then). Before Feisty, same computer, same card, no problem, so it's a regression even. If you'd ask me, I'd bump it up a bit from "low"...

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.

I'll just chime in from the sidelines to mention that my particular problem with xvideo has been fixed for a good while. Don't know about the original reporter...
