Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file, your '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' file and the full output of 'lspci -vvnn' as attachments to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

I can also confirm Brians report of this bug on a Dell Inspiron 8600 with ATI Radeon 9600Pro. X is not starting after upgrading from Gutsy Tribe 5 at 19.09.07.
The same behaviour happens in a fresh installed Gutsy Beta.
My screen starts first black, than displays more and more weird colored lines.

The same behaviour I had sometimes with Kubuntu 6.x at shutdown, working with xorg-driver for the ATI card. If using the non-free ATI-driver this error in Kubuntu disappeared.

Do you still have this problem with 7.10 or Hardy alpha3?

At late september I did a short workaround to get radeon work on 7.10 final release:
I installed gutsy tribe 5, activated ATI restricted drivers and then I upgraded to final 7.10. Disabling ATI drivers worked fine.

My installation is working since that time with all updates, and no problems with radeon driver at all.

Cool, I'll close this bug then. Flextc, if you still have issues with 7.10 or later, feel free to reopen.
