When i try to play a video in Totem, there is sound but no Video even though it is a video file that contains video content.

[Workaround A]
Disable Xv:
1.) ALT + F2
2.) type gstreamer-properties
3.) run
4.) go to tab "Video"
5.) change the first Plugin to "X Window System (No XV)

[Workaround B]
mplayer -vo x11 /usr/share/apps/k3b/extra/k3bphotovcd.mpg

Could you please try to describe more precisely the problem ?
What is the file you try to read ? what codec, what file format ?

Is it the same with all the videos you try to read ?

Yes, I was testing out the Totem player because i am new to Ubuntu. So I open up the file in "Examples" called "Experience Ubuntu.ogg" which is a .ogg video file. It happens to all of the videos "3" i've tried to open.

Does "gst-launch playbin uri=file:///path/to/video" do the same?

I have also experienced same problem but in gutsy latest. Tried Theora/Ogg, XviD/Avi, DivX/Avi and WMV. Gtsreamer backend with all needed codecs installed.

I believe it is related to free ati driver. Mine is an ATI Radeon 7000 VE card. I also tried using mplayer where 'xv' video output module doesn't work. 'X11' works. I have already tried gst-launch command and that too doesn't help.

I never had this problem till gutsy tribe 1 though. So can't really confirm this in context of Feisty.

No more a problem in Gutsy with latest ATI Free driver. Can the original poster comment about the state on Feisty?

Can confirm this bug with "ati" free driver.
Can not play "Experience Ubuntu.ogg". VLC + totem show similar problem. sound works.
7.04 no problem here.
beta 7.10 + latest update + 6.7.194-1ubuntu1 + DRI off (Bug #144297) => garbage screen in totem and VLC player.
beta 7.10 + latest update + beta 6.7.194-1ubuntu1tv6 => garbage screen in totem and VLC player.
Waiting for new release 6.7.194-1ubuntu2 for re-test.

Does "gst-launch playbin uri=file:///path/to/video" do the same? => Yes

I can only "FIX" this problem by installing the propertary ATI "fglrx" driver.

7.10 beta with the latest update "ati" driver 6.7.195-1ubuntu2 does NOT solve this problem.
With "vesa" driver it works.
So no mpg, ogg etc with the "ati" driver.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

Downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-ati to 6.6.3-2ubuntu6 (Feisty) is a workaround for this bug.

I have the issue on Hardy with the proprietary driver fglrx.

Since thre is a bug with that driver and the opengl rendering it is quite annoying.

It seems to me that this bug is linked with the composite extension being activated.

And maybe fglrx is a little buggy, but since it works under other distro, there is for sure something one can do for hardy.

This bug still occurs under Gutsy and Hardy with ATI Technologies Inc ES100 and radeon driver. Video output doesn't work with XV but with OpenGL if it is choosen in VLC. The xorg.conf was recreated after Hardy upgrade.

I don't know what card the original reporter has, but ES1000 (RN50) is a server card and not much of a multimedia card, see also http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=458007 where some fake ChipID trick is mentioned.

I also experience this bug. ATI RV350 AP [Radeon 9600], free driver (radeon), Ubuntu 8.04 with latest recommended and security updates. Tested using totem and gst-launch.

If you (the developers) need more information from the testers to investigate and fix this bug, I'll try to help. Just let me know.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.
