This happens when booting then 14.04 final beta, so there is currently no 3D acceleration out of the box on (at least some) AMD APUs. It happend to me with an E1-2500 with an integrated Radeon HD 8240. Unity is currently unusable without the proprietary drivers (not that that would be a big loss, but unity is unfortunately the first thing a user sees in ubuntu).
