Bug Description

This bug is in 12.10 13.04 and 13.10 (I've been waiting to see if would go away ;-)

When the system comes back from suspend the screen is black. Changing virtual terminals does nothing. If I have a program that makes sound, such as "Alarm Clock" the sound plays. I.e. the system appears to be alive but lacking a screen driver. Cntrl-Alt-Del has no noticable result.

The only way out of this state I can figure out is to re-power the machine.

A system update recently changed the close lid back to suspend, so closing the lid kills the video.

I suppose it is clear from the uploaded information, but just in case, this is an Acer 7250.

Thanks!

Thomas Lynch, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Chris,

I'd be glad to help out. Thanks for looking at this. I'm traveling, and
will have to wait for a spare moment and good connectivity. Should be
within a couple of days if not sooner.

I have the same machine as when I reported that bug, and I can tell you
that today I am running Fedora 19 and the bug is here too. If right now
I close the laptop lid or suspend, when it comes back the screen will be
black. Nothing helps but cycling power.

I'll download an ubuntu image to usb and follow up.

Thomas

downloaded 'trusty' ;-)

yes, once the lid is closed then opened the screen is blank, and
actually it appears the system is hung, but it is hard to know for sure.

Also it boots without a mouse between 1/2 and 2/3 of the time, so it
requires multiple boot attempts to get the mouse to appear.

The run from usb stick does not keep information between bootups.
Hence, the WIFI settings must be re-entered on every boot, and then
apport must be installed again. It stands to reason that the apport
report will not have any useful data, because a reboot is required after
it crashes when the lid is closed, so as to get a terminal to run apport
from.

The three of those demons all play together! I've been at this for a
good couple of hours just to get the lid shut, opened, and to send a
report. I might humbly suggest, that for the 'run from usb' not to
store any data is a bit over the top in terms of making debugging
difficult, you all might should change that.

I'm not able to do an install to disk because the Fedora disk
partitioner has made a pretty mess on the prior install. They have gone
'minalmist' and virtual, but it gave all sorts of errors and left holes
on the disk. (Yes I filed a bug on that, and yes of course there was no
data in the apport report because the disk had to be repartitioned
between runs ...) I'm afraid to touch that house of cards, gosh if I
break the system while traveling I will be in quite a fix!

Good luck with the debugging!

Thomas

BTW Fedora 19 has both of these problems on Acer 7250 also.
