Bug Description

The touchpad buttons don't work anymore after a recent system upgrade. Cursor movement and tap options are unaffected - I get left button functionality with a one-finger tap and right-button functionality with a two-finger tap. Scrolling also works.

Hardware is OK (dual-boot shows that).

xev | grep -i button does not detect button presses, only if done by the tap on the touchpad:

$ xev | grep -i button
ButtonPress event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x4000001,
    state 0x0, button 1, same_screen YES
ButtonRelease event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x4000001,
    state 0x100, button 1, same_screen YES
ButtonPress event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x4000001,
    state 0x0, button 3, same_screen YES
ButtonRelease event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x4000001,
    state 0x400, button 3, same_screen YES

System is running x11, but wayland didn't make a difference.

Are you sure you have xserver-xorg-input-synaptics installed? Ubuntu 17.10 doesn't ship with it any more.
