Bug Description

No feature of the touchpad works ever since I installed ubuntu. It's detected as a generic mouse. Touchpad tab is missing in system settings. The outputs of the following commands are attached as suggested in wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection. See output.tar.gz.

cat /proc/bus/input/devices > ~/devices
xinput --list > ~/xinput
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > Xorg.0.log

I was able to fix this on my ubuntu 14.04 installation using the vivid kernel (3.19). I ran:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-vivid

did a reboot and the touchpad seems to be working now.

Other people seem to be able to solve this problem by using a newer kernel too:

By the way, it seems that there are other issues with the ALPS trackpoint which is used with the E550. With the trackpad working ok, the trackpoint "stick" is slow and the configuration options for speed and acceleration seem to not be available.

See http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraNav or http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Trackpoint#ALPS for some more details.
