'USB Keyboard+Smartpad' not detected as touchpad in 'Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro 700t'

Bug Description

The touchpad on the detachable base for the 'Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro 700t' is not detected as a touchpad. The 'Touchpad' tab in 'Mouse and Touchpad' settings is missing. The keyboard works fine and the touchpad works as a mouse (moving the cursor, clicking the left and right buttons). Tap to click also works, however scrolling does not on either the edge or with two fingers.

I am uncertain of the manufacturer of the touchpad as it is not listed clearly anywhere, however I suspect it is "Elan Microelectronics Corp" as this is listed under lsusb, they make touchpads, and the entry disappears when the base is detached. Nothing related appears under lspci or lshw.

This is the first time ubuntu has been installed on this machine and the touchpad has never worked correctly.

Any use of synclient outputs: "Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?"

Ubuntu 12.10.

Daniel Powell, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-synaptics REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

I'm suffering the same problem but not under ubuntu, I have a XE700T1C-A02US which is now running Gentoo. The device is detected as a USB HID mouse during boot, and xinput sees it as USB Keyboard+SmartPad, so none of the psmouse elantech tricks appear to work. No one elsewhere seems to mention the same USB vid/pid combination with regards to linux. I'm running the latest kernel (3.12.2 at the time of writing). Any tests I could run or information I can provide, just let me know, I'm eager to get this problem solved (primarily to turn off tapping).

As I mentioned in the bug, I'm running Gentoo, not Ubuntu, so I'm afraid that command won't work. However, I'm happy to provide specific information that may help with this bug, just let me know what information you need.

I also have this hardware (Samsung XE700T1C-X01AU), and am determined to do whatever I can to get this device 100% supported by GNU/Linux and Android. My distribution of choice is Debian, but will definitely install Ubuntu if it will help get this issue resolved.

My current situation is as follows:

Windows 8.1: Everything works

Fedora 20 (UEFI Boot): Keyboard worked up until yesterday, but with reliability issues. Smartpad only ever worked in legacy mode.

Debian Sid (UEFI Boot): Keyboard dock works for a few minutes, then stops. Upon disconnect then reconnect, spams dmesg with:
[ 1293.983396] usb 1-1.3: clear tt 1 (0070) error -71
[ 1293.987397] hid-generic 0003:04F3:0740.0008: can't reset device, 0000:00:1a.0-1.3.1/input1, status -71

Please let me know what I can do help to resolve this bug. If I can get involved with kernel/driver hacking, I'm up for that too.
