Bug Description

Tap to click with Synaptics touchpad appears to have developed a problem in Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 beta-1 that was not in the alpha. When using the touchpad to click links (and occasionally drag windows) the right-click context menu appears. Changing all the touchpad settings in Control Centre has no effect on the problem. System has been re-installed twice to ensure it was not an installation issue.

Version: Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 Beta-1
Platform: x86 (32bit)

This sounds like a regression with the libinput package so I have tagged this.

Please download and install the beta 2 candidate ISO to see if you can reproduce this issue.

This issue is still present in Beta-2 (32 bit).

Please note that this behaviour is not found in the Xubuntu Beta (installed 2018-04-05) which has the same libinput (libinput-bin & libinput10) packages as those in Ubuntu Budgie Beta 1 & 2.

hmmm - what if you install gnome-shell (sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop). Given that budgie uses GNOME components we need to try to narrow down where the issue is coming from.

I note you are using 32bit - does the issue also occur on the 64bit Ubuntu ISO / 64bit Ubuntu Budgie ISO?

Installed GNOME shell - no change.

The hardware (Samsung n-130) cannot handle 64-bit.

On Kubuntu 18.04 beta, if tap-to-click is enabled the same behaviour occurs: the touchpad appears to be intermittently unable to differentiate between a single finger tap and a two finger tap when single finger tapping; it does not have the reverse problem, two finger taps are never mistaken for single finger taps. Occasionally the secondary context menu appears when merely moving the pointer.

As I generally don't use tap-to-click for right click (two-finger-tap) it struck me that if I could turn off two finger tapping or change the response to a two finger tap from right to left click using the libinput settings I would be able to effectively avoid the problem. I know it is possible to change the response to 1,2,3 clicks from l,r,m to l,m,r but don't know if it's possible to change it to l,l,l.

The basic GNOME settings, found in org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad, can be changed using cli or dconf but have no effect.

The latest round of updates, including libinput 1.10.4-1, have either solved the problem or reduced its occurrence to the level where it is no longer frequent enough to be noticeable on Ubuntu Budgie 18.04.

The problem also no longer occurs in Ubuntu Mate 18.04 beta 32-bit after latest round of updates.

I have had this problem since upgrading to 18.04. I am on a lenovo x260. I could not solve it so i disabled my touchpad in the BIOS. Recently I tried to reenable the touchpad and to my surprise it worked again. However, since I updated my system last week the error is back. Very frequent, random rightclicks which makes the system completely useless. I just disabled the touchpad again and carry a mouse with me everywhere I go :-)
