Bug Description

System: Dell Latitude C610 with Radeon Mobility M6 LY [Radeon Mobility 9000] with latest drapper packages.

X / Gnome freezes randomly almost every time it is used.
Host is not reachable from network either.

First I thought that this would be same: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/16873
, but perhaps it is not.

KDE (kubuntu) doesn't seem to have this problem, so is it using X / graphics card somehow differently than gnome?
Neither Breezy had this problem.

Logs doesn't show (for me) anything special.

I am experiencing a similar problem on a Vaio Z1 with Radeon Mobility M6 LY running Dapper.
There are regular complete freezes, reboot necessary. Disabling DRI does not help. The problem disappears when switching from "ati" (or "radeon") to "vesa" in xorg.conf.
Using "ati" (or "radeon") certain buttons under gnome are not displayed correctly, there is like a grid of wrong pixels. This indicates already that there is a problem. Also this effect disappears when using "vesa" instead.

I experience the same issue, or something similar. I have ATI's mobility radeon 9100 IGP, which worked fine in Breezy and pre-LTS Dapper (with DRI, too).

When I am *away* from my computer for a few minutes, I will return to find the screen half blank and hard frozen, i.e. I can't restart X. I'll install kubuntu and see if I still have an issue.

Forgot to mention - I use the "ati" driver.

I disabled gnome screensaver and haven't had a freeze since. No doubt the above users have a different (and more serious) issue than me.

My laptop has been also stable after changing "ati" to "vesa" in xorg.conf.

I have the Dell C610 with radeon 7000 graphic card and I got the same problem (freeze) using "ati" and "radeon" drivers.
Indeed, the "radeon" driver is just a kind of 3d extension to "ati" driver. So I changed "ati"/"radeon" to "vesa" and it works fine now.

Do you know if we are going to have a fix for this driver ? In dapper of edgy ?

And for me, I'll finally buy Nvidia card for next time. I hate ati equipment, always bad working.

i have a Radeon R200 QM [Radeon 9100] on a amd system.
i use dapper with all updates.

i have random freezes some times verry often and then it works fine for a long time. (with ati driver)
some buttons show the wrong color until i point at them and i had a freeze problem with the screensaver but i think this was with breezy.

in addition my cd writer msi ms-8348 doesent work. if i try to burn a cd with the ati drivers enabled my system freezes and thaws until i reset it. with the vesa drivers cd burnig does not work either but after a short period of freeze the system works again normaly.

lets see if the freezing stops with vesa driver...

Sony VAIO PCG-GR114EK Laptop, Ubuntu 6.06 fully updated.

I have "Radeon Mobility M6 LY" on my laptop.

I also have random freezing, with the ATI driver.

I also get a grid of pixels over some buttons. The pixels disappear when the mouse is moved over the button.

With the VESA driver the laptop does not freeze.

Thank You for reporting this bug.
However, this bug is identical to bug 16873 which has a fixed released already. So I am closing it as a duplicate. Please feel free to reopen if you have anything to add.
