Race condition on rendering the time

I'm using Ubuntu 17.04 dev with xscreensaver 5.34-2ubuntu1 and on locking the screen there is a race condition in which the digits of the date render multiple numbers. For example if this issue happens the right digit of the seconds seems to show 2 different numbers which looks then distorted. This issue happens very rarely as (besides from being happened right before creating this ticket) I remember to have not seen this issue for a while (maybe over 1 or 2 years).
