Bug Description
Binary package hint: xsane
Using an HP 3570c scanner attached via usb, xsane crashes without issuing a message after the completion of the scan or acquire preview, before any image is displayed.
I am using an up-to-date Alpha 5 version of Kubuntu Karmic.

Sorry, I forgot to mention: This happens with Flegita as well. Again it works in Jaunty and not in Karmic.
Rodney (rodney-jokerst) wrote : | #3 |
I have encountered the same problem. Window just disappears after a scan or preview.
Cecil Carpenter (cscj01) wrote : | #4 |
I have the same problem with identical symptoms. I started a thread in Desktop Environments yesterday titled "xsane quits", but I have had no responses to date. I had no problems with this in Jaunty, and I have upgraded to Karmic.
Cecil Carpenter (cscj01) wrote : | #5 |
BTW, I just tried xscanimage and got the same result. I do not know if this rules out xsane and makes it a sane issue or not. I am just learning my way around Ubuntu, so it may not matter. But xsane is a frontend to sane, which is what xscanimage is. Dores xsane use xscanimage?
Cecil Carpenter (cscj01) wrote : | #6 |
Is nothing happening with this bug? It would be nice to use my scanner.
S. Christian Collins (s-chriscollins) wrote : | #7 |
I also have this exact same bug with an HP ScanJet 3500c. I was able to solve it by installing Jaunty's version of libsane (1.0.19-23ubuntu7). Could this be a problem with the HP3500 backend in the 1.0.20 version of libsane?
Henrik Daver (laederlappen) wrote : | #8 |
I had the same problem with Xubuntu Karmic and an HP ScanJet 3500c, but could also solve it by following S. Christian Collins' method.
Reini68 (reinhold-stansich) wrote : | #9 |
@Henrik or Christian: How would I do that? Synaptics doesn't offer this version (what seems logical to me, as it only has the latest versions that are included in Karmic). Could someone please lead me the way?
Henrik Daver (laederlappen) wrote : | #10 |
@Reini68: Uninstall the libsane package in Synaptic, then download the Jaunty .deb file from here: http://
Reini68 (reinhold-stansich) wrote : | #11 |
Thanks. That worked, more or less. At first it didn't work, but after installing sane-utils and libsane-extras via the deb-packages it seems to work. Only remaining problem is that I cannot quit xsane and so I have to kill the task to get rid of it. But that's a minor problem.

Just to confirm this bug with my scanjet 3500c and in two different karmic systems: 32 and 64 bit.
deraffe (fffwg) wrote : | #13 |
Confirmed. This is a problem with sane itself, as it is frontend-
I tried scanning from a HP 3500 with scanimage -vvv: Tests (--test) ran fine, mostly, but when trying to scan it hang up, the last line displayed being "Closing device".
Downgrading to Jaunty's libsane 1.0.19 solved the problem. Everything works fine, even other scanners that were configured through third-party drivers with the old (Karmic's) libsane.
(btw: a dpkg -i --force-all libsane_

I have the excate same problem, I scan all my bills etc onto my Drive, I have an HP PSC 2210
Stopped working after Karmic upgrade.

I just tried this with a whole range of scanners on Karmic x64 - I can confirm that the bug does not depend at all on what kind of scanner you use. Is there any chance that the Ubuntu developers will fix this? At work we need to scan. This bug is definitely a blocker.
MIchael B (silverlightningcat) wrote : | #16 |
Reverting to Jaunty's libsane sane-utils and libsane-extras did not work for me.
When I reverted I get xsane
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
WARNING: Unhandled message: interface=
Followed by Failed to open device `hpaio:
The device isn't as far as I can tell busy doing anything.
Any tips on how to proceed because I really need to get this scanner working, it's been months now and the paper work is piling up.

I am experiencing the same problem with an HP OfficeJet 6500. I tried to downgrading to jaunty's libsane - didn't have any effect. I then tried downgrading to jaunty's libsane, sane-utils, xsane, and xsane-commons - still no effect. When running from the command line, I see this error message:
The program 'xsane' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala which is kept fully updated.
Current Work Around:
The scanned image is in temporary working directory with a file name like xsane-conversio

I am using an HP scanjet 3500c with ubuntu 9.10 64bit.
I was tired so the instructions were not clear to my tired little head but once I figured it out, it worked fine. Thank you.
For those easily confused like myself:
1) goto System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager, search for SANE and mark for complete removal of sane packages installed.
2) Close Synaptic Package Manager
3) Following Henrik Daver's instructions from 2009-11-19 click on the link to down load libsane for your install. (at the bottom and choose a mirror on next screen)
4) It will ask what you want to do with the file and select open.
5) It then says something about wanting to install this when a new version exists, yes you do.
6) Click the install at the top right part of the screen when that comes up.
7) When that is done go back to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager, search for SANE
8) Install a front end, Xsane.
You should be good to go. Thank you Henrik and all the others that posted here.

Hi,
yes you can do so but the next update from the system is going to delete
your working installation. Therefore remove the check for updating the
libsane file in synaptic every time. I use the working version libsane
1.0.19-23ubuntu7 instead of the newest suggested version libsane
1.0.20-4ubuntu3. Be careful and save your work.

that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

and also like Sofi W : "GtkSpinbutton: seting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated"
any other suggestions ?

Scanning Problems in Ubuntu Karmic
9.10<http://
I went to scan in some pictures today with my new Karmic install and ran
into problems. When I went to scan I would get "Failed to start scanner:
Invalid argument" Some Googling revealed that many people are experiencing
broken scanning after upgrading to Karmic with various printers. A little
more searching revealed the solution. I think that there is probably an
even better solution, but this is how I got scanning to work.
First I installed libsane-extras:
sudo aptitude install libsane-extras
Next I edited saned.conf to enable the epson driver.
gksudo gedit /etc/init.
In this file I removed the # at the line that read #epson
To get the parameters for me scanner I ran:
$ sane-find-scanner
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.
# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure
that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0839) at libusb:001:003
found USB scanner (vendor=0x0bc7 [X10 Wireless Technology Inc],
product=0x0004 [USB Receiver]) at libusb:007:002
# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported
by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
# Not checking for parallel port scanners.
# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.
# You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
# found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
# necessary.
Here the line that read "found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0839)
at libusb:001:003" was the key. These parameters needed to go in the epson
drivers file.
gksudo gedit /etc/init.
I replaced the line that read "usb" to read "usb 0x4b8 0x0839" Finally I
just needed to restart the sane daemon.
sudo /etc/init.d/saned restart
After this scanning finally worked.

Thanks, I have an epson printer but a HP scanner. What frustrates me is that it was working with the above but the next time I tried I got the error "Failed to start scanner: Invalid argument"
SoFl W (sofl-w) wrote : | #33 |
Didn't work, tried a few other things. Same problem. I didn't have a /etc/init.d/sane.d/ directory.
SoFl W (sofl-w) wrote : | #34 |
I have to force a quit on xsane after starting it.
I found one thread that said my username should be added to the sane group. I tried that and it didn't work.
rik (rikkroondijk) wrote : | #35 |
you do have , honestly, I got confused too , it looks like just a text file
, when you type sudo gedit /etc/init.
into the file you need and can make the changes as directed. did you get
the necessary information from sane-find-scanner ? usb 0x etc. ?*

Hi all,
I went the steps as described in the link
<http://
but not exactly. I have the same problems with the
path /etc/init.d/.... and it doesn't work with my changes.
My files are located directly in /etc/...
Yes I added a file (because it wasn't to find in /etc/sane.d/.. only
another types of scanners) with hp3500.conf and wrote into it the output
from sane-find-scanner:
#
# Configuration file for the hp3500 backend
#
# HP Scanjet 3500
usb 0x03f0 0x2205
After this I have installed the newest version of libsane and restarted
the sane deamon
sudo /etc/init.d/saned restart
Now I have started the scan. It runs to the end and finishes without
picture. So I went back to the older version of libsane. It works.
Regards
Peter

Stroud, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
As per https:/
If you have an issue in a supported release (ex. 16.04) please file a new report, and feel free to subscribe me to it.
Changed in xsane (Ubuntu): | |
status: | New → Invalid |
This happens on Ubuntu Karmic final release as well, I checked with two completely different computers (one a 4 yr old notebook, and one a up-to-date desktop machine), both running Karmic.
The machine running Jaunty is NOT affected by this bug, scanning works great there.
Maybe a bit more into detail:
Starting xsane works and it finds the scanner immediately. Starting the preview scan shows the scanned image in the according window. Then the part that moves the sensors (sorry don't know it's name, I'll call it sensor-array) moves back to the starting position, while the previewscan is viewed. When the sensor-array reaches the starting position xsane closes without further notice. Syslog and demonlog however still continue to document (obviously two entries every second minute):
Nov 7 09:55:41 siemensnotebook wpa_supplicant[ 1592]: CTRL-EVENT- SCAN-RESULTS 1592]: CTRL-EVENT- SCAN-RESULTS 1592]: CTRL-EVENT- SCAN-RESULTS 1592]: CTRL-EVENT- SCAN-RESULTS 1592]: CTRL-EVENT- SCAN-RESULTS 1592]: CTRL-EVENT- SCAN-RESULTS

Nov 7 09:59:41 siemensnotebook wpa_supplicant[
Nov 7 09:59:46 siemensnotebook wpa_supplicant[
When scanning without preview the same thing happens. The progressbar "Receiving RGB-Data" is filling, the sensor-array moves back to the start and xsane is gone again. No entries to any of the logs except those shown above are made.
When starting from terminal some warnings are displayed. Directly after starting:
WARNING: Unhandled message: interface= org.freedesktop .DBus.Introspec table, path=/, member=Introspect
After that as long as xsane is running:
(xsane:5886): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated
Nothing else when it crashes.
