Bug Description

Binary package hint: xsane

kat@leon:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04
kat@leon:~$ apt-cache policy xsane
xsane:
  Geïnstalleerd: 0.995-1ubuntu1
  Kandidaat: 0.995-1ubuntu1
  Versietabel:
 *** 0.995-1ubuntu1 0
        500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What I expected to happen:
As in previous releases of Ubuntu (hardy, gutsy)
Start XSANE, Push the Preview button, HP 7490c scans a preview, push Scan and scan a document

What happend instead:
I've upgraded to Hardy Heron and now XSANE recognizes my scanner just fine but when I click on preview or scan XSANE goes grey waits about 1 minute then crashes the X-server, closing all open programs and brings me back to the login screen.

What logs do you need to solve this problem?

Bug still present in 8.10. Tried to acquire image from scanner and ended up crashing window manager.

This problem is the same as Bug Report #134754.
Anyone made any progress with it?

I fixed this by installing the latest xsane packages from the Debian project. I think this will be fixed as soon as that stuff trickles down.

Latest version of of xsane on the Debian website is xsane_0.996-1_i386.deb, this is the same version in the Ubuntu 8.10 repository as of today.

However, Xsane still freezes and then crashes X when I try to scan using my HP ScanJet 7400c.

Looking at the Xsane website, 0.996 was released in Sept 2008!

ToastBusters please advise what version of Xsane you installed to fix the problem on your 7400c and what release of Ubuntu are you using?

Sorry for the delay in my response, it appears I currently have installed 0.995 and it's working flawlessly. You want to install (from the Debian project) the following packages for your architecture:

http://packages.debian.org/sid/libsane
http://packages.debian.org/sid/sane-utils
http://packages.debian.org/sid/update-inetd

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10.

If 0.996 is indeed what comes with Ubuntu, then I have an older version installed rather than newer as I had suspected; but either way this fixes it. Hopefully the Ubuntu team will have the default scan utility working by 9.04. Good luck!

ToastBusters, you're dead right - upgrading to the Debian packages listed fixes the problem in Ubuntu 8.10 and probably in 8.04 as well as this has been "broken" since then! XSANE now works really well.

A few things to note, you also need http://packages.debian.org/sid/libs/libsane-extras otherwise libsane reports an dependency problem.

The install order is

update-inetd
sane-utils
libsane-extras
libsane

Lets hope the Ubuntu team are equally on the ball.
